This is what it is like to cross a fresh lava flow while approaching a live volcano. Fresh lava is extremely brittle, sharp and presents a million ways to break an ankle. When the initial flow of lava sets it is nice and smooth; then fresh stuff comes up from behind and crushes the last flow creating this jumble of loose rocks and slabs we had to cross. Much of it was still hot and noxious gasses escaped through the cracks. It was an eerie scene especially in the dark when we had to cross back over.
