Trekking up to the live cone on Tolbachik volcano in Kamchatka, Russia during my Kamchatka Photography tour in June 2013. Join a photo tour of Kamchatka in June 2014.
We had to walk around 10 km from our camp on the high plateau. We had to cross dangerous and unstable fresh lava flows which consisted of a confusing jumble of loose boulders and razor sharp hardened lava; on the way back we had to do this in the dark. Clouds of noxious gasses shrouded the area and we had to wait for the wind to blow it clear till we could cross.
On the horizon you can see the white cone of Kronotsky volcano (3528m) and the black smoking cone of Kizimen (1531m). Kizimen was extremely active and we could see pyroclastic flows roaring down the sides all day.
