We trekked up the village of Baon in the remote Gallum valley in the far eastern corner of Arunachal Pradesh. Baon is the last village before the impenetrable jungle meets the high himalayas at the Indian border with Myanmar or Burma. The village consisted of 10 or 15 huts and all the surrounding fields were cultivated with opium that they grew for their own consumption. They do not process heroin out of the opium but only smoke a mild version that keeps them in a zenned out stupor. Every village hut seemed to have a stoned out old guy such as the person in the photo. He was sitting with his grandson and a few other people smoking the day away.
