We travel not for trafficking alone;
By hotter winds our fiery hearts are fanned:
For lust of knowing what should not be known
We take the Golden Road to Samarkand.
James Elroy Flecker
In 2010 I took the “Golden road to Samarkand” and the other legendary towns of the Silk Road, Khiva and Bukhara, in Uzbekistan. Most of the monuments of Uzbekistan have undergone major restoration; one would even argue that they have been over restored. Whatever the case maybe they still make make an awe inspiring impression as you stand before them. There is so much history and so much to see. I would love to go back and spend some more time wandering the streets and bazaars of this lovely country.
I took this photograph in one of the many 15 century madrassas, or religious schools, of Samarkand. I tucked my self into a corner of the courtyard and used my Nikon 10.5mm fisheye lens to get this effect.
